Lisa Power and her family believe so. Involved since it’s inception in 1975, Lisa–daughter of the creator of the Cathy’s Rum Cake®–has had first hand experience in making this unique delight for locals and celebrities alike. Through the decades, the original Italian custard-filled rum cake quickly gained notoriety, becoming a time-honored family tradition passed down through generations. Soon, people inquired about sharing their rum cake tradition with family and friends around the country.
With the boom of the Internet, Kelly – Lisa’s husband and engineer by trade – recognized that technology could play an integral role in extending the rum cake’s reach; he licensed Cathy’s Rum Cake from its creator in 2001. In 2006, he ended his 25-year mechanical engineering career to develop the means in which to successfully ship these delicate cakes across the United States.
Fast-forward to 2009. Lisa, Kelly, and their 3 daughters – Lauren, Megan and Madison – opened the doors of Cathy’s Rum Cake Worldwide in Gilbert, Arizona. In this new, state-of-the-art factory, the Power family incorporated advanced techniques and modern technology into the process of producing the “New Generation” of the original rum cake. Using such technologies as blast-freezing and online ordering, they’ve mastered a way in which to handcraft customized cakes upon demand.
Over the course of their first year of business, Cathy’s Rum Cake Worldwide, Inc. successfully shipped cakes to more than 85 cities in over 35 states. From Hawaii to Alaska, New York to Florida, pleased customers frequently complimented Lisa and Kelly’s high efficiency in modern technology, production, ordering accessibility, and customer service, as well as the many improvements in the quality, freshness, flavor, and packaging of the original rum cakes. Such feedback made it readily apparent that one more major change was necessary. Lisa and Kelly decided to take that final step and re-establish the “New Generation” of the original rum cake with a new name to differentiate the traditional from the modern and bring the 20th century into the 21st century.
